Beacon Rock State Park
What to do on a Sunday afternoon
Up highway 14 is a very nice park to spend some really good quiet time and watch the day go by. Part of Beacon rock actually sits in the Columbia River and part on land. For those more adaventerous there is actually a short walk (moderately difficutl) that takes you to the top of the rock. Talk about a view!! While you are at this location there is also a trail that takes you to the Pacific Crest Trail. Again this is for the slightly more advernterous.
If you look across the river you can find Crown Point! Picnic table are available if you brought snack or a lunch. There are also two campgrounds very nearby.
What’s else can I do?
To get there you can go east on Highway 14 about 14 miles east of Vancouver. Make sure you bring your binoculars as several ”critters” around. A little farther east say another 14 miles is the Bridge of the Gods. Several vendors have been known to be at this location selling honey, salmon, carvings, jams/jellies, etc. And don’t forget to barter!
Give this a try. On a sunny day this is a very pretty drive especially when you go over Cape Horn.
Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge
Each week a new article will appear in NW boomers. The article is intended to offer a relevant fact or two about our generation or it might discuss an upcoming event around our area. There are lots of good reasons boomers can remain active. We live in one of the most diverse and beautiful areas in the country from high desert to ocean shores. Many of the things we can do really do not cost a lot.
Ever been to the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge? Never been there you say? It’s a preserve for all sorts of animals and a tribute to the native Indians that used to inhabit the area. Check it out! There are several walking trails and some benches to sit rest and just take in natures splendor. Make sure you take binoculars. Check out the link for directions and information on what you will likely see. Migrating geese are very frequent visitors.
This website will offer more and more of these sorts of things if you help. Let us know about interesting places you’ve been or an activity you believe others might also enjoy.
Welcome NW Boomers!
If you were born between 1946 and 1964 you are part of the baby boomer generation. This year 7600 people per day will be retiring. This number will grow over the next several years to somewhere around 10,000 per day. What are all these people going to do?
Many websites for boomers have really interesting events but they are hundreds of miles away! This site is dedicated to the local community in and around Portland / Vancouver. As the site develops – with input from you – it will continue to evolve and develop. So tell me about an interesting hike, restaurant, event, or volunteer activity. We will add it for other boomers to enjoy. Also check the links for more things to do.
This part of the country is so pretty and the weather isn’t that bad, so go get involved. It doesn’t matter if you like to visit the coast, the mountains, high desert or prefer just to stay local. This area has it all! Stay active so you can benefit both physically and mentally. See you next week!
